How To Organise Your Photography Business

Juggling the day to day running of a photography business can take time & efforts on your part. This is the work which no one likes, paperwork, invoices, etc. Important thing is not to replicate and duplicate things, this takes up more time than we realise and lost time equals losing money. Every business (photography or not) needs to have a system in place. Keeping track of your contacts, equipment, jobs, sales, purchases, marketing, diary & products and a lot more.

Many photographers use a spreadsheet to run their business. Spreadsheets are fine if you want to crunch numbers and perform automatic calculations, create charts, ‘what if’ scenarios or keep track of simple list of data. However, you will end up entering the same values of information into multiple spreadsheets. This is not time efficient and you need to update different files if you are tracking related information in several spreadsheets. When you use a spreadsheet, viewing the set of data is not easy and quite often requires lots of scrolling to view it!!

Alternative to spreadsheets is a database management system which will simplify your work and allow you more time to do whatever you want, whether being behind the camera or with your family! A database will help you manage all your day to day business tasks with ease, answer questions and solve problems, link related data, view data in different ways and a lot lot more…

Here is what you need to do simplify your day to day tasks:

1. Keeping track of your contacts i.e leads, customers, suppliers,

2. Sending quotations and confirmations of bookings in a professionally laid out PDF format

3. Manage your work flow tasks / reminders for things to do on specific dates

4. Raising sales invoices / inputting purchase invoices

5. Linking expenses / purchases to jobs for precise cost analysis

6. Sending / creating delivery notes to clients

7. Sending remittance notes to suppliers for payment

8. Email marketing to get your message across

9. Keeping track of all your camera / lenses / software serial numbers

10. Mail merging and sending letters to clients & prospects

11. Creating reports to see your sales, purchases, expenses

12. Forecasting figures v actual figures

13. Keeping track of appointments with a diary

14. and a lot more…..

Can you imagine trying to do all the above with spreadsheets, you cannot. It is possible but you will end up replicating and duplicating things and is very time consuming. What you need is to get or create your own database which will speed up your administrative tasks. If you are good with programming, you can create simple databases, but this will be time-consuming for you or you can buy an off-the-shelf program which is made for photographers.

So if you are starting a new photography business or in need of getting organised. I recommend you get a database and see how it will transform your business.

Starting Photography As A Hobby

Photography is an absolutely wonderful hobby to pick up and learn. When you see the quality of the photos that the professionals release, it is awe-inspiring enough to give you motivation to keep striving for it in your own portfolio. The only way you are really going to master the art is when you have experience on several types of equipment and you know how to fully use their capabilities.

Most people with start with a digital point-and-shoot. This will teach them the basics of composition, lighting, and subject. From these building blocks you can start diversifying your shots. Once you get a handle on what angles, subjects, and locations to shoot and how to properly capture them you can start looking into upgrading your camera.

That is why a beginner should always look online for the best SLR cameras and other photography equipment. Online you not only get good deals, you get reviews of the products and descriptions of their features. You can look on forums and get advice from fellow enthusiasts and maybe pick up a few tips as to what brands and models to look for (or which ones to avoid).

The camera is one tool you must absolutely make a researched effort to find. You should find one that works with the kind of image-capture you want to be involved in. The single lens reflex cameras are best for subjects that need a fast shutter-capture, for example sports, nature, time-lapses, etc.

While there is a pretty big competition between digital and SLR cameras, you really need an SLR to take your photography to a new level. They may be bulkier but this is because they feature better sensors for light and motion. They tend to have a strong image quality and a fast response time. You composure the picture through the viewfinder and you have options for different types of lenses and external flashes. This means more versatility and control over the final product. That and the image capturing features are customizable to a much grander variety of degrees.

Basically as a beginner you need to play around with these settings until you get a handle. Buy a few books on photography and start learning the lingo. The better you understand how the cameras work, the more controlled you will be and the more effective the outcome of the images you capture. The sooner you begin, the less time you miss to capture some amazing events.

Tamron 28-300 Vc Review – Excellent Super Zoom Lens For Full Frame Dslr

Today I tried the Tamron 28-300mm VC lens on my Nikon D300s camera and now I have enough information to write this Tamron 28-300 VC review.

This lens is an update to the old Tamron 28-300 lens. The VC update is only available for Canon and Nikon users. The Vibration Compensation (VC) feature is well worth the money I paid for it.

This article will be a short review on this lens. I will be discussing what are the new features on this lens as well as how it performs compared to the old version.

I found the optical quality of this lens to be great so I tested it with both full frame (Nikon D700) and cropped sensor cameras (Nikon D300s). To my surprise, the images came out very sharp on both cameras.

To a normal viewer, the image quality of the lens is comparable to a professional lens. The super zoom range was just perfect on my full frame camera.

However, I found the zoom length to be a bit awkward for a cropped sensor camera. If you want a better range, look at the Tamron 18-270mm VC lens instead. This lens will give you a better zoom range for a cropped sensor DSLR.
Although the 18-270mm VC has a better range, I’ve found the lens’ optical quality to be less sharp than the Tamron 28-300mm VC.

When doing the review, I’m mildly surprised that this lens has a fast and accurate autofocus mechanism. Here’s one tip on autofocus: In low light, switch to manual focus. This will prevent autofocus hunting (due to the lens’ small aperture).

In terms of sharpness, I found the center and border sharpness to be excellent. The distortion is also minimal.

You can use this lens easily for portrait photography if you use the 50mm or above focal length. Although the bokeh is average, it is good for most situations.

Another very handy feature is the zoom lock mechanism. I’m not afraid of zoom creep, especially when transporting the lens. The lens is also very light weight, making it very easy to handle.

As a final thought for this review, I rate this lens as a great value proposition, ideal for non-professional use and travel.

I don’t recommend this for professional use because the slow aperture speed makes it impractical for use in most professional photography situations. Nor does it make sense to use this lens in extreme weather.

Discount Wedding Photography – How To Get Your Portraits Cheaper

Every penny counts when you are planning your wedding and honeymoon. With our tips, you will be able to get discount wedding photography that does not look discount at all!

First, you have to understand, no one is going to offer you a cheaper price on your wedding photography if you dont ask for it. Basically, in the world of negotiating there is no room for embarrassment.

You have to be willing to go the extra mile to save a dollar. You might not be able to save as much as you want on your discount wedding photography, but even $20 less is $20 left in your pocket.

You will need to look online and determine the average going rate for wedding photography in your area or the area you are getting married. From here you will know about how much you should set your budget at. Then start looking at the prices for the packages you want. Get ready to begin negations with the photographer.

Make several appointments to various photographers so you can find the potential discount wedding photography studio you will be using. Lets say the package you want has everything you want but it has too many 10x12s. Take note and discuss the possibility of reducing the price since you will not need everything in the package.

Explain to the photographer that their prices are a bit out of your price range and it is vital that you do not overspend your budget. Then discuss the possibility of reducing the price of your package since you do not need the additional 10x12s. More likely than not, the studio just opened their doors to becoming a discount wedding photography studio without even realizing it.

Another way you should be able to get the price down a little is to show the photographer that the prices in your area are not quite as high as he or she is charging. This can often open the eyes of the photographer and almost force their hand at becoming your discount wedding photography studio.

No one wants to lose a potential client, so more often than not, if the price is still reasonable you can get the photographer to come down to a lower price. Thus, you have gotten your portraits at the price you wanted!

The Uses Of Photography

Functional, practical or purely aesthetic, photography lies somewhere between science and art. Many businesses depend on photography and the entire written media is supported by photo materials of events. In fact, people have got used to seeing pictures for the columns they read. Other than this one major application of photography, people take pictures because they like it and they can.

The beginning of photography can be traced back to the discovery of the camera obscura in the antiquity. For a long period of time, photography depended on films for the image forming device. In comparison with digital technologies, the film, as recording medium is considered obsolete. A latent image is created on the film, and then it becomes usable when processed chemically in the studio.

We can hardly mention all the uses of photography for such long lists. Pictures are used for scientific evidence, in fact, together with recorded videos, they become the main proof in support or contradiction of a certain event. There are military, archaeological, forensic, data storage and geographical applications for photography, and these are the largest and most extensively used. Identity control and personal documents require photos. Besides the wide-range usage, photography also plays an important part in entertainment, personal life and memories preservation.

The average mobile phone user takes photos with the cellular. The technology has reached such an extent that photography dominates so many intimate moments in our lives. There is no baptism or wedding without photo shooting and video recording. Or, consider for instance traveling, we will inevitably take at least one camera with us on our journey.

As for the artistic dimension of photography, there is hardly anything commercial about it. So many art galleries now house photography exhibitions worldwide. The camera thus captures emotions, gives a unique touch to reunions, celebrations and ceremonies, making things look much brighter when seen in retrospect. Artistic photos contradict everything that is commercial or practical: they have not direct functionality other than to delight and send a message to the viewer’s heart.

Stock Photography – A Viable Option

With the present economic climate and its detrimental economic effects spreading to each and every possible corner in the world; many people have lost faith in the pre existing system that governed the way in which business activities were carried out. So its not a surprise that many people are looking for new jobs and most of all jobs that are more self reliant in nature. This phenomenon or mode of thinking is quite justified because in the pre recession years people were more dependent on giant multi-national corporations for their jobs. However, the sad fact is that it was the unscrupulous business practices of these same corporations that brought about the present recession and large scale unemployment. Then again every environment, no matter how extreme the conditions are; provides its set of opportunities. In many ways the stock photography industry is one such industry or sector that holds tremendous promise.

The potential offered by the stock photography industry is pretty obvious as there still is a lot of demand to buy stock images in spite of the economic downturn. Then again just like the pre recession period the hunt is still going on for the best stock photography agency. Now one may wonder why the stock photography sites have managed to proliferate during such trying times. Then again when one considers the fact that with so many free images being available on the internet how is it possible for individuals to buy images? In fact its quiet surprising to many that there is even the slightest amount of demand to justify the need to by images.

The growth of the stock photography industry during these periods of economic downturn can perhaps be described as – one of the direct consequences of the recession that shows us the right way forward. To simply put it – stock photography sites are the new advertising alternative and most importantly they use the medium that shows the maximum potential i.e. the internet. After the economic downturn companies had to cut down their costs and still maintain their competitiveness, what more the internet was the most obvious choice. Correspondingly for advertising effectiveness stock photography sites are the best source, period! Then again in the stock photography industry the emphasis is now on producing images that are unique, exclusive and of the highest quality. And without doubt these are the requirements that would categorize the best stock photography agency.

Can You Take Great Pictures With The Cheapest Dslr Camera

Why would someone buy the cheapest DSLR camera they can get their hands on? Actually, there may be some substance to that premise. While cheap does not usually equate with good or excellent, when you are talking about Nikon or Canon DSLR cameras, cheap does not mean bad either. In fact, the least expensive model could possibly be the best DSLR camera for beginners.

What makes a good picture? It surely is not the camera, although having a great camera never hurts. But the photographer makes a good picture, not the camera. He or she must know something about composition, lighting, and a few simple camera basics, like where the shutter button is.

It’s true that lots of quality megapixels are highly desirable among today’s photo buffs, but that does not make a good picture either. Years ago, 3 megapixels was “top of the line” and folks spent hundreds of dollars per megapixel. Now you can get five times that for less money. But the truth is that you can print an 8 by 10 picture of good quality with a 3-megapixel file.

There is a story circulating around the photography forums about a professional photographer who worked in New York. When he was commissioned to take a picture, he was paid very well. The way the story goes, he would show up at the location, set up his camera (a film SLR model), take a light reading, and take one shot. Then he would pack up his gear and head back to his studio. One shot! And, according to the story, he nailed it every time.

Granted, this may just be a story, but there are plenty of photographers who take fantastic pictures with cheap DSLR cameras. There are others who take great pictures with cell phones or point and shoot cameras.

What is the best thing you can learn with regard to photography? First, learn how to take a picture. This simply means that you should learn the basics of lighting and composition. “See” the picture in your mind’s eye. Move around your subject and find the best angle. Move in an out, up and down. Do that thing you have seen in movies or on TV where you make a frame with your hands to compose your shot. Then take that shot.

Whether you are using a cheap DSLR camera or a $25,000 model, getting the basics down is going to mean more than the kind of equipment you use.

Of course, you will need to know how to manipulate your chosen camera, and that can come with time, but to focus on the equipment is the wrong focus when you are starting out.
